Brent Cross Sub Station

Fifth Elevation are proud to have designed and installed the architectural panels and supporting system. The public artwork for the Brent Cross Town substation, titled ‘Here we come, here we rise’ and commissioned and created by the London-based artist Lakwena Maciver.

Taller than the Angel of the North, this steel superstructure is one of the first major UK structures to use re-purposed steel which has reduced the carbon emissions of the structure by 40%.

One of the largest urban regeneration projects in Europe, we installed the wrap of this eye-catching substation in a 21-metre-high permanent public artwork – all of which sits on our robust, sustainably friendly Downer Helping Hand framing. Our senior design manager – Luke Davis used Rhino for the 3d software and importing into AutoCAD for the 2d detailing and Fifth Elevation delivered the individually bespoke architectural panels and supporting system final designs, then went on to install.

The façade’s four undulating bands, together with triangular-shaped ‘lenticular’ panels that have each of their outward facing surfaces treated with a different colour, create a kaleidoscopic visual effect. The structure uses low carbon, durable materials including re-purposed steel as part of the environmental sustainability solution – to complete the construction of an amazing architectural wrap to transform a utilitarian infrastructure into a major new landmark for Brent Cross.
